Carrot, I love your art. It is so unique and expressive and the way you portray emotion is so raw. You somehow pack so much character into such simplistic designs and I commend you for that!

I was wondering what your art journey was/is like, if you're okay with telling? When did you start drawing, how did you develop, and how did you get to where you are now?

I feel like I've been drawing even longer than I've been writing. I used to cart my sketchbook around everywhere as a kid and just be sitting in a corner drawing while everyone else was talking or doing stuff

I drew tons of anime growing up, mostly fanart of sailor moon and ranma and fushigi yuugi and stuff like that. I'd also come up with ideas for manga I wanted to draw (my mom had to convince me in junior high that moving to Japan and becoming a manga artist was not a realistic career goal lol) and I would order those physical screentones you had to cut out and place on the paper and use a G-pen with a bottle of ink to ink

most of my life I've drawn on paper and would line by hand, scan it, then color it. I was convinced I couldn't use tablets because I'd only ever tried on a glossy Samsung tablet and I hated it (it wasn't until working on OW that I bought a non-screen tablet and that changed my world)

I ended up getting a degree in studio art drawing because I didn't know what else to do (I started as a music major but didn't like it, wanted to switch to Japanese but my school didn't offer it, so chose art lol). I will not say my time in school radically helped my art... but I did get to do some figure drawing and did do a lot of art. but I felt quite out of place as many of my professors would try to talk me out of my cartoony style (I still remember when we had to share our sketchbooks with the class and mine was full of fanart done in my own style for things like gijinka Mario and Star Fox, but all my classmates told me it felt fake and copied since it was cartoons and not real art... 💦)

anyway......... I tried to go into animation storyboarding after school but couldn't get any ins or leads so I went back to school for Japanese LOL art became just a hobby again. But I continued drawing all the time. When I was in Japan and didn't have a scanner, I started doing mouse drawings in MS Paint. I think this is where my affinity for pixel drawings started. I'd continue to draw, draw, draw for all the fandoms I've been in since. my style evolved and changed a lot, sometimes a bit more cartoony, sometimes a bit more realistic (but still mostly anime-esque style)

I don't think it started turning away from anime entirely until I got into some cartoon fandoms. I think that's when the big ears and noses started to develop. And then a short while later I made Easter, which you can see has a slightly different style than early OW but it was like the precursor. I also returned to the mouse drawn MS paint style for the Easter CGs because I didn't have a scanner. this style continued into my early OW drawings but I guess kinda kept evolving as I kept drawing the chars for years and years. It's become a lot more fluid and organic now and I've gotten more consistent with the style and how I draw the chars

I guess that's it, really!! I feel like I've left out a ton but it already feels so long and I can't really think of anything else specific to add or focus on, so I'll just leave it with that kinda summary I guess 🤣 but ofc if there's anything more specific you want to ask I will do my best to answer!!

“Hello friend! You've been invited to this year's Mask Festival! The event takes place at Kokochiyoi Village, the largest village in Kitakami! Come join us for food, games, fireworks, and of course-”

Oh? Halfway through the letter, the handwriting changes.

“Hello there!! It's me, Kenji! Aya really wanted me to invite some of her friends to the festival this year, so I thought I'd send you an official invitation! I also made you a couple masks with the help of a close family friend! If you're a feral or anthro, wearing them'll give you a gijinka form! Don't worry- you won't actually turn into one! It's just an illusion that only works on the villagers, so they won't freak out when they see you. If you'd like to bring a different mask but still want the illusion powers, just take the bells off the masks and onto your own!

Aya, me, and my husbands all hope to see you soon!”

Ogerpon ran into the shrine waving the letter.

Ogerpon: "We got mail! Papa Wo! Papa Oki! Look!"

She held it up for them to see. As Wo started to read it, Pink came in and stood beside Ogerpon. She held two fox masks in her hands.

Oki: "What are those, Pink?"

Pink: "Wawa!" ("Masks!") "Wawa-wa-wawa!" ("They have powers too!")

Ogerpon took one and looked at it.

Ogerpon: "What do they do?"

Spot: "The l-letter says that th-they can t-turn you into a human..?"

Oki and Wo observed Ogerpon and her siblings becoming quite curious about the masks. As they ran outside, they went back to reading the letter.

Outside, the three siblings started to find out what sort of looks that the masks could give them. It didn't take long for Pink and Ogerpon to start arguing over which mask they wanted to have. Thier argument was brought to an end by Spot.

Spot: "S-stop!" (her siblings cease arguing and look at her) "Th-the letter a-also mentioned that w-we could make our own! S-so there's no n-need t-to argue..!"

Ogerpon and Pink look at each other, then back to Spot. The former let go of the mask that they had been arguing over, becoming quite happy at what Spot had said.

Ogerpon: "Yeah! We can make really cool masks too!"

Pink nodded.

The siblings started to put together their thoughts.

Back at Grasswither, Wo and Oki were doing the same as they looked at the letter.

Oki: "I say we should go! Last time, Ogerpon was sad that she couldn't go, so let's all go to this one this time!"

Wo showed him a happy look.

Wo: "We'll tell them when they get back. Ogerpon is going to like helping us to design masks too~ And I'm sure that we can manage to get some suitable attire for the event if we look around Mesagoza."

Oki nodded. He then noticed Ogerpon and her sibloings running inside.

Ogerpon: "We're gonna make the best masks for the party!"

Pink: "Wawaaa!" ("Yeaaah!")

Spot: "I s-suggested that w-we base them on one o-of our types. W-what do you think?"

The Malamar looked at Wo and Oki. They nodded in response.

Wo: "We shall get started on designing the masks first, and, as we do that, we take turns to get our event attire. Does that sound suitable?"

The siblings showed their approval. Ogerpon was quick to run to where she kept her paper and pens. Her siblings joined her at the nearby table, where they began to draw out mask ideas.

Oki: "Shall I go to get what I'm wearing first, or you?"

Wo put a vine to where their chin would be.

Wo: "Hmm.. Yes, I think that would be a good idea. I'll get started on my mask design, and when you get back, I shall head out."

Oki: (he nodded) "Alright!" (he gave the letter to Wo and ran out of the shrine) "I'll be back soon!"

After Oki left, Wo joined the three siblings at the table and started to design his mask, basing it on his Grass typing.

platforms : I originally started RPing on Deviantart in art-groups. Specifically a Pokemon Gijinka group. I've been RPing since ~2010 I only moved to Tumblr back in ~2015/2016

plotting / winging it / memes : I can do both/all? Generally I like winging it and memes to begin with just so we can jump right in, but I don't mind plotting things out to start. I LOVE coming up with big plots and over arching ideas. I want my blog to have "arcs" and feel like the characters are alive which does require plotting and I'm never against it!

muse preference.

gender : I normally RP female or NB muses, but I do drabble in male muses as well. My favorite non-OC muse is male but I tend to cling to more feminine or female-oriented muses because it's easier as an AFAB demigirl to attach to for me.

multi or single : Ship wise or... muse? Ships im all for multi-ship because why limit myself? But I'm also poly so I tend to also make a lot of my muses poly lol

least favourite faceclaims : I don't...really use face claims? Much? I usually either draw my own icons if I have an OC or have a canon-character I can use icons for

fluff / angst / smut.

fluff : I love fluff. Fluff, soft, slice of life, things to make the characters feel alive. Not everything has to be big bombastic and torturous! I want to have the "normal" every da moments to make the characters feel alive, breathing, and not just "hit this story beat every little thing has to have meaning" . This isn't a TV show, this isn't a time-crunch series, we have all the time in the world to go into these things that shows and series cant!

angst : I'm on and off with angst. I love angst because it develops and challenges characters but I also know too much can feel. dragging. I've, in the past, fallen into the hole of writing too much angst which became a whole. Is this me doing this for the character? Or am I only writing this to hurt myself? It's a whole thing but I'm never against angst as long as there's reason or purpose and it isn't literally everything I'm doing. There needs to be a balance, the angst will be so much better if we can build the characters up first.

smut : I'm extremely insecure about smut. I am terrified to make a fool of myself as I'm sorta on the Ace spectrum? Sort of, I identify with what is called Aegrosexual which is in the ace spectrum but that means everything is fantasy. I don't know how things actually work so I get worried I'm fucking it up and then I look foolish so I tend to stay away from it except under *very* specific circumstances with people I'm comfortable with.

I am feeling rather emotional because in the ABSURD disorganised garbage pile that is my computer, I’ve found an old folder created a few years ago full of unfinished WIPs that I forgot existed... Because Blo0db0rne took my life completely + I have an awful memory

These are characters from Undertale that I really liked, and I used to have a habit of drawing characters with flowers! (using Japanese flowers language every time because that one is the most accurate and well-thought and subtle)

And I completely forgot about this WIP, but I really wanted to finish it back then..

An even better one... A kind of sketch that doesn’t even need lining and coloring, it is already very clean and good!

...Okay, this is just heartbreaking now. At this rate I should switch from BB to ER just for the sake of drawing large variety of plant life, it was my forte I can say x)

They are from Kirby! Bardiche, Aranora and Dag Goedendague - the inverted versions of Francisca, Flamberge and Zan Partizanne! I used to be very very very into the inverted/reverse/mirror/whatever concept of Kirby characters, but I ended up being very disappointed in the whole ordeal. Like... Why spending so much time and effort into completely inverting canon characters? But back then it was a design+writing exercise that got out of hand, and honestly, some designs ended up soooooo good that they would fit well for original characters! Like, look at how STYLISH weapons of these girls are?

THESE people!!!!They were a product of the ‘different mirrors’ complication, when I decided that parallel versions are separate, so are Black Mirror vs Dimensional Mirror ones. I like Zarantul’s palette so much though?

Gijinka Susie! A more soft, more cartooney style definitely allowed me to draw human characters way better. Plus my brain was in a better shape, hehe. Brain is a tool of an artist as much as their hand and their pen.

Unfinished beach time picture with Holy Nightmare corp! I would actually, legitimately finish this one because spikes in art style don’t count with simple designs like Kirby, but I am just waaaaay too far drifted from Kirby times. (miss them dearly)

Shiver Star fun times with random characters. It was actually a commission from someone - ‘draw anyone you want on Shiver Star’, that I was unable to finish in reasonable time. I sent money back to that person, but they REFUSED despite me failing them, and told me to keep it. o_o” Nothing I was able to do since they were not accepting transfer, but I hope wherever they are, they no longer play an altruist like this. Still feel guilty.

CONCLUSION: Fandom shifts are a bitch and I weep for my unfinished drawings (I didn’t even share all of them), I will never know peace again because I am more natural at colorful and round things but Soulsborne is grim and detailed, I need to reuse cool ideas that were spent on the whole ‘what if this character was nothing like themselves XDDD’ ordeal and also... flowers.

so this month I learned what happens when I really commit to a daily challenge... feels like the equivalent of a full-time job.

first the missing days: 19 and 29 when I got to 29 I was going to do something, thinking, who would be a hot villain that's not immediately obvious and super popular? drew a blank (i'm not usually drawn to villains) and I was thinking I wanted to draw a woman this time but there are so few attractive women villains who aren't dressed skimpy which just kinda puts me off from their design. it just passed me by and tbh was I missing much considering the fact that i'd been drawing hot villains all month and all last month too? wheh

for day 19 I neglected to make a drawing because the prompt was doll/marionette and, well

I was actually in the middle of customizing a doll.

unfortunately I couldn't finish it up, even by the end of the month, so we will see the results of that later.

next the days I got stuck on: 14, 17 14, candygore, is so beyond my wheelhouse i just felt a strong aversion to drawing it. the end result was so unbelievably tropey i just feel a sense of repulsion looking at it. the only thing i kind of like about that drawing are the teeth

17 I couldn't get the Look I wanted, at all, even if the drawing is nice. also, the perspective on the character on the left is off, and it feels like his eyes aren't fitting his face properly.

MLP day I just don't like drawing horses in general so I decided I would still go for it but combine it with the gijinka day, which comes immediately after. or before. whatever the order, the Pinkie Pie gijinka is both prompts in one.

Posting them late Now I did do most of them on the day they were to be done, what helped me accomplish that was planning my drawings ahead of time by sketching them out in a document and then pulling from the sketches on the day the drawings had to be done. but I didn't do all of my sketches at the start in the beginning, so when I started to run out of preplanned sketches is when I started falling behind! So I could definitely stand to do a little more prep if I do another monthly challenge.

The ones cobbled together last minute today Day 30 I did draw on the 30th, but on paper. was gonna post the paper version but I did end up ruining it by going over it with gel pens. So I went over it digitally, quickly, just to have the image up. and day 31 I was... a bit sad cuz I didn't get to give out candy cuz my dad hates kids. and also still working on my doll. so I wasn't feeling Halloweeny yesterday but I cobbled up something today. weh

But at the end of the day. It was so much work I don't even know if I'll ever do it again

2018 Year In Review

Another year, another review 💕(I actually typed most of this up before 2019 and then got distracted, whoops)

To put things short, 2018 has been AWESOME :D Exhausting and fast, but awesome.

I started it off pretty uncertain how things were going to go, dreading it would be a repeat of 2017′s boring TAFE courses and endless job rejections. But the miracle happened - a 2D animation studio opened up near me, I applied, did an animation test and got the job!

The job was a contract from 1st of April - 21st of December, so I spent the majority of my year going to work to animate characters for a really crazy but hilarious new kids show called Spongo Fuzz and Jalapena, due to air mid 2019 :) 

It was honestly the most fun job I have ever had and I can’t wait for the next project! 🎉 I have never been this exhausted in my life, though. 😅I had already booked a whole bunch of conventions before I got the job, and didn’t want to cancel them so I was working nonstop - Animation during the day and intensive convention prep every night. 

I also had the bright idea of creating a full colour 26 page comic -with a tight deadline - so I was madly working to the point I didn’t even have time for dinner half the time :’) I am sort of happy with the comic, but also kind of wish I never had the idea in the first place. 😅

I tabled at a ton of conventions; Melbourne Supanova, Central Coast ComiCon, Other Worlds Zine Fair, Sydney Supanova, SMASH and Canberra Gamma Con. If next year doesn’t go so well on the job side of things I’m hoping to add a few more conventions to that list - Brisbane Supanova, Oz Comic Con and Animaga to name a few. I’ve already booked Sydney Madman Anime Festival!

2018 was the year my partner and I celebrated our 4th year together, and he never fails to amaze me with his continuous love and support. I was too sick to attend the first day of SMASH, so he set up and ran the whole stall for me while I stayed at home. Same with Sydney Supanova, I was too bogged down in animation work and couldn’t afford to take the Friday off, so he set up and ran the stall for me on Friday, then we ran the stall together on the weekend. He also tended to my every need when I broke my toe, cooked all my meals when I was busy with work and even packaged + posted all my Etsy orders every day because I was always working during post office hours. He listened to all the problems I was having with my stall setup and helped make shelves and decorations to make it look and function better. I was getting stressed because my desk space was too small, BAM he bought me a brand new desk with plenty of storage. I was getting stressed that I had so much on my convention to-do-list and couldn’t keep track of all my project ideas, BAM, he sets up a whiteboard and helps me brainstorm everything so I can keep track of all my thoughts and ideas and what to prioritise for future conventions. I didn’t even ask him to do any of this, he just loves to help me and make me happy and I am forever blissed and happy to be able to spend my life with such a wonderful human!

Arsty Highlilghts / accomplishments:

🌸I designed 9 cute Houseki no Kuni acrylic charms which have been doing really well at conventions!

🌸I also drew a cute series of ‘Sleepy Gem’ Houseki no Kuni / Steven Universe holographic prints, which I’m quite proud of 😊

🌸I created my 2nd enamel pin design, which already needed 2 reorders because they were so popular! ;w; I never knew I could make something that so many people love *sob* I’ve already planned to make these into a series! (already designed some deer ones, and thinking of doing foxes next ^_^ )

🌸I also tried getting gold foil prints done for the first time, which was pretty cool! I got the american sizes mixed up though so I might try for the bigger size next time :) (grainy photo cause its a screenshot from a video)

🌸I’ve been taking steps to make my stall look more ‘professional’, and got a really neat wooden sign made for me by my friend as_sweet_as_jasmine!

🌸I’ve started revamping my favourite series of posters - the Eevee Gijinka girls :) I plan to have them all done and ready for 2019s conventions! 

🌸This was the year I got an iPad, so I could do digital art on-the-go. Honestly its helped me so much, and I can’t wait to be able to use it more (sorta didn’t get a chance to touch it while i was working!)

🌸I got Copic Markers for my birthday so I had a whole new medium to play with! These mixed with using a brush pen for inking really make my inktobers pop and I’m eager to draw more with them  :) 

🌸Speaking of Inktober, it was a huge accomplishment for me to put effort into a decent artwork every day this year! Usually theres a few dud ones when I lacked inspiration, but I somehow managed to make it work ;w; So when it came time to printing the books, theres 31 illustrations rather than 25 like the others :) Also the whole rainbow theme idea came from how cool I think it would look flipping through a rainbow book - so I managed to make that happen and couldn’t be happier!

🌸I passed 1000 sales on Etsy!! 😱As well as 1000 followers on instagram! Crazy right??

General 2018 highlights

🌸2018 was the year one of my best friends got married! I made cute little clay wedding cake toppers for her :)

🌸The year Owl City’s 7th album Cinematic came out!! All the tracks are so GOOD and exactly the sound all us hootowls were longing for. Also Be Brave is a tearjerker, in a good way. What an amazing human Abbey is to Adam <3 

🌸The year Spyro Reignited Trilogy came out!! It’s absolutely amazing, and I love every second of it. Every time I play it I just can’t help but stand there looking around at every detail because everything is just so gorgeous *_* And the nostalgia is so real.

🌸Not exactly a highlight but the year Tumblr went NSFW free, and lost hundreds of thousands of users 😂I’m still here though. Got a dumb tradition to keep up ya know.

🌸The year my work had a hilarious Christmas party where we had to dress up as a character from Spongo Fuzz and Jalapena. It was the first time I actually put effort into a cosplay by myself 😂(possibly the last) (wont put a photo up for embarrassing reasons)

🌸the year I broke my toe for the first time xD;; definitely not a highlight but a first! I couldn’t walk for weeks! it sucked!!! T__T

🌸The year my friend successfully funded his kickstarter for his own cartoon ‘Nurry Brothers Adventure World’ :D So proud of him. I’m gonna help him animate!

🌸The year Lano and Woodley reunited with their amazing show ‘Fly’!! I loved it so much I saw it twice :D 

🌸The year I tried doing Halloween for the first time - I bought a bunch of lollies and chocolates and decorations on my letterbox/door to let people know I was participating. I got 2 different groups of people at the door, 5 people all up 😂More than I expected tbh!

🌸I tried Ruby chocolate for the first time! It was ok .. just kinda tasted like berry yoghurt flavoured white chocolate though ;w; 

SO! What’s coming for 2019?

I’m not really sure at the moment, but I have high hopes for Cheeky Little Studios (the animation company I worked for) - so I guess I’ll just have to wait and see if any of their next projects get concrete start dates :) I’m not as terrified of the year as I usually am when its just one big question mark. I know I can make decent money through conventions and commissions in the meant time so I’ll just continue doing what I love!

“I also want to make a lot more non-fandom things for market stalls, as well as a comic and zines!” - I made the comic, as well as 3 inktober zines and a cute ‘if I fits I sits’ cat zine! As well as a bunch of cute original enamel pin ideas and my whole inktober was original art :D 

“Hopefully I’ll hit 1k followers on fb/ig? :D that will make me feel important lol” - I hit 1k on instagram!! I felt very important xD

“I’m also hoping to go on a holiday this year." - I didn’t, for job reasons ... buuut I’m booked in for a cruise in Italy / Greece this September that I’m extremely excited for!

ok but, what is Kisekae?

Kisekae is a flash game/application that works mostly as a character creator, using a mix of interchangeable parts, bits you can move around freely, and lots of sliders to change sizes and positions. Think of it as the 2D version of the Sims/Spore creators.

ngl it started as a k-on hentai game back in like 2011?? there’s still k-on girls and lewd stuff around but the focus is far from it now.

maybe when you open it for the first time, the tabs look like this. THIS IS BAD it means it loaded on the easy mode.

click here to unlock the Expert mode. it sounds scary, but it’s actually been the default mode for years. now you should see a lot of tabs.

LETS TALK ABOUT THE IMPORTANT STUFF FIRST

SAVING.

This is the save tab. “SAVE” and “LOAD” save the entire scene in a .txt (all models, background, items etc). "Export” shows the codes of the selected models, so you can copy them and store them somewhere. You go to “Import” to paste codes and load characters. The small pencil button opens a window to save and load entire scenes in the app’s cookies. It’s very handy but you will lose everything if you clear your cookies. The last two buttons save or load ALL the data you have in the game, aka all the scenes you saved with the pencil button.

TAKING PICTURES

fOR THE LOVE OF GOD DO NOT DARE TAKE SCREENSHOTS there’s a handy way to save better quality pics. First slider is the zoom. It’ll be your best friend to get closer and edit faces and hairstyles and details and such. See that 05/05? That’s the PNG quality, so make sure it’s always at 5/5. The squares button next to the PNG one will make the background transparent when you snap a picture. Very cool, bc kisekae backgrounds are kinda ugly. The icon on the far right lets you select a region of the screen that’s great too

STOP THE AHEGAO

Next. If you click on the model’s clothes you’ll notice they disappear and they get surprised. The automatic emotions were good when it was a porn game but to actually create content it’s just annoying idk why it still automatically loads like that tbh.

Anyway, go here to set the facial expressions to manual mode. The “Select/All” switch makes you edit all the models at the same time or just one.  (Note: as pochi adds more tabs, they can get moved around and be put in a different group. just keep looking thru the pages until you find the icon you want)

HAVE ONLY ONE MODEL

You’ll most likely don’t need all 9 models at the same time, so you can go here to deactivate them. tbh it’s placed in a really weird place... a year ago it wasnt as confusing idk why Pochi added this update :/

TIME TO HAVE FUN

My recommendation is clicking on everything to see what happens. That’s honestly the best way to learn how to use it. Instead of explaining how to make good looking stuff (i cant do that bc. there’s not a single way of “doing things right” this is artistic expression u do what u do) i’ll jsut give some tips and tricks

1. HOLD SPACE TO GO OVER THE LIMITS OF MOST SLIDERS. It works wonders. Make heads smaller, shoulders broader, eyes thinner, hair pieces larger, bend time and space with the unlimited power of space key.

2. HAIR PIECES ARE NOT HAIR PIECES. BELTS ARE NOT BELTS. RIBBONS ARE NOT RIBBONS. Think of them as shapes to make stuff. Use hair pieces to make capes. Use the lines in the facemark section to draw a new nose. Make entire pieces of clothing out of belts and ribbons. The only downside is that if you move the head, hair pieces and ribbons move with them so making clothes out of ribbons turns your characters into statues

3. CLICK ON CLOTHES TO CHANGE STUFF. If you click on some clothing pieces you can change some things like unbuttoning shirt buttons, opening sweaters, putting sunglasses on their head and removing parts of scarves.

4. THE DEFAULT PALETTE IS UGLY. please do use a custom one

5. YOU RAN OUT OF SLOTS? Use the free floating items on the 3rd set of tabs. You can have extra belts, ribbons, arms, furniture and speech bubbles. Even load external images. But keep in mind extra stuff is not attached to characters, so it won’t move around with them or save in their individual codes.

6. USE OTHER PEOPLE’S EXPORTS RESPONSIBLY. There are lots of people on deviantArt and the Pochi forums (official Kisekae forums) that make character, clothing or hairstyle exports for other people to load and use on their creations (like Sims mods!). However, most dA people have rules if you want to use them on something you upload, so make sure to read each user’s rules!

7. TECHNICALLY THERE ARE NO MALE, MUSCULAR OR BIG BODY TYPES. You can force it out, but we’ve been forever cursed with the hip size being linked to the leg size. So your guys will either have feminine hips or scrawny ass legs. There aren’t any muscle options apart from abs, and the most similar thing we have for chub is a pregnant looking belly. You can always edit it with photoshop later or suffer and make muscles and fat with belts and hairs.
